1865 is the site of a former military arsenal factory in Nanjing, China
Developers are interested in using 1865 as an economic catalyst development in the southern end of the city. The project inherently deals with the complicated conception and definition of historic value in China.
The site will bridge the major commercial axis to the west with the smaller local commercial lane to the east. This connection strengthens the only major means of activating the site to the north due to a variety of boundaries tightly enclosing the site.
Three different criteria were used to determine elements of preservation on the site: urban value, age value, and architectural value. Urban value is given the highest priority, as the tree-lined outdoor corridors define the most unique experience on the site and are simultaneously emblematic of Nanjing’s well-defined green streets.
The outdoor corridors also establish an urban system of alternating indoor and outdoor bands of space that is applied across the whole site to integrate new and old construction and connect the whole site with the rest of Nanjing by using the commercial connection points on the east and west as anchors for this urban flow.
